Common Orthodontic Issues

Crowding of the Teeth

Crowding occurs when there is disharmony in the tooth to jaw size relationship, or when the teeth are larger than the available space. Crowding can be caused by early or late loss of primary teeth, or improper eruption of teeth.

Overbite of the Teeth

An overbite is a misalignment of the teeth. It occurs when your upper front teeth cover your lower front teeth. Overbite is a type of malocclusion. This term describes any misaligned or crooked teeth.

Missing Lateral Incisors

Missing lateral incisors are most commonly caused by a condition called hypodontia, in which someone is congenitally born with missing teeth. This is extremely common and is one of the most typical dental phenomena, right next to having extra teeth.

Underbite

An underbite is a dental condition where your lower teeth extend farther than your upper teeth. Usually, it results from a misalignment of the jaw. This is known as a Class III malocclusion. Not all underbites are the same. There are different levels.

Overjet

An overjet describes a condition in which the upper front teeth protrude outward. Sometimes called buck teeth, this refers to the horizontal relationship of the upper and lower incisors.

Open Bite of the Teeth

An open bite is a malocclusion (bite problem) where the top teeth and bottom teeth do not come together or bite in the correct position. There is no overlap of the teeth leading to them looking "open." Open bites can be caused by either tooth position, jaw position, or a combination of both.

Spacing of Teeth

Spacing (the opposite of crowding), is an excess of space for your teeth which results in gaps between your teeth. This generally occurs when the teeth are smaller than the available space. Spacing can also be caused by protrusive teeth, missing teeth, impacted teeth or abnormal tissue attachments to the gums.
